The Second Letter of Peter (2 Peter 1:3-11)
Faith is to believe in something. Virtue is moral excellence or righteousness. In order to have faith, you must have virtue because if you didn’t have virtue, there would be no reason to have faith. The character you are comes from what you believe in and what your morals are. You need virtue to help build your faith. Knowledge is your understanding of the world. You need knowledge in order to know what good morals are, and what bad morals are. Knowledge helps us choose the rules we live by. Self-control is the ability to control one’s emotions and actions. You must have self-control before knowledge because you may become hubris. Being too prideful of yourself is very dangerous and can get you in trouble.
Endurance is the capacity of functioning under prolonged stress. You must be able to endure life even through the tough times. You must be able to endure before self-control because self-control is a long-term state. Devotion is a strong affection. You must be devoted to yourself, your neighbors, and your enemies because you will need to endure every tough time or easy time in life. You must love being devoted in order to endure through a lifetime. Mutual affection is to have sympathy for one another as human beings. Mutual affection grows into devotion. You must first sympathize to each other before you become truly devoted to them. You must show mutual affection to everyone and everything before it becomes devotion.
The definition of love is a tender and passionate affection for another person. Love is where everything begins. You must love everyone and everything before anything because there is no way to show all these actions if you hate someone. Love is the most important factor simply because as without it, you are nothing and your life means nothing. In order to grow and help others grow, you must show them love. The very first step is to love yourself because if you don’t love yourself, how can you expect to love anyone else? It is not possible to love before loving yourself. Love is the cornerstone of all these characteristics.
